In old calendars, the day of the Monkey was used as one of the twelve zodiac signs.
From 申 (さる, 'Monkey', the ninth sign of the Chinese zodiac) + の (possessive particle) + 日 (ひ, 'day'). The term follows the traditional naming pattern for days in the sexagenary cycle.
