私し淑しゅく

admiring and privately following someone as one's master or model; being deeply influenced by someone's works without direct teaching

Formal, somewhat literary term. Describes a relationship where one studies or emulates a person (often a historical figure or author) through their works, without having been their direct student. The verb form is 私淑する.

• 彼かれは漱そう石せきに私し淑しゅくし、その文ぶん体たいを模も倣ほうした。

  He admired Soseki as his private master and imitated his writing style.

• 私わたしはこの哲てつ学がく者しゃに私し淑しゅくして、独どく学がくで研けん究きゅうを続つづけてきた。

  I have privately followed this philosopher as my model and continued my research on my own.
