A judge who serves as a full-time legal professional, as opposed to a lay judge or part-time judicial officer.
In Japanese trials, professional judges and lay judges sometimes conduct proceedings together.
裁判員 is a lay judge who participates in criminal trials alongside professional judges, while 職業裁判官 is a career judge.
