chilly spring weather; spring chill
Refers to the unseasonably cold weather that often occurs around the time cherry blossoms bloom (late March to early April). A seasonal word (kigo) used especially in haiku and weather reports.
It was a day of spring chill, so we needed coats for cherry blossom viewing.
Spring chill is expected to continue this week.
Compound of 花 (hana, 'flower', referring to cherry blossoms) and 冷え (hie, 'chill', from 冷える hieru, 'to become cold'). The word evokes the contrast between the beauty of blossoms and the lingering cold of early spring.
