grass and straw (as fodder)
Archaic term for mixed grass and straw used as animal feed, especially for horses. Not used in modern Japanese outside historical contexts.
In old farming households, they used to store grass and straw in preparation for winter.
Compound of 草 (kusa, 'grass') and 藁 (wara, 'straw'). The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the term straightforwardly combines the two materials.
