become rough; lose refinement; deteriorate (of skill)

Used for artistic skill, craftsmanship, or technique becoming coarse or sloppy due to neglect or lack of practice.

• 練れん習しゅうを怠おこたると、ピアノの腕うでが荒すさむ。

  If you neglect practice, your piano skills deteriorate.

• 長ながい間あいだ筆ふでを取とらなかったので、書しょ道どうの腕うでが荒すさんでしまった。

  Because I hadn't picked up a brush for a long time, my calligraphy skills became rough.

Auxiliary verb use, usually attached to the -masu stem of another verb. Indicates that wind, rain, or a similar natural force becomes stronger or more violent. Literary and somewhat old-fashioned.

  It was a night when the wind blew fiercely.

• 雨あめが降ふり荒すさんで、川かわが氾はん濫らんした。

  The rain fell violently and the river flooded.
