A species of edible kelp, commonly used in Japanese cuisine.
アラメは味噌汁の具としてよく使われる。
Arame is often used as an ingredient in miso soup.
Hiragana spelling is also common.
Kanji form is rarely used; the word is almost always written in kana.
Usually written 荒布, from 荒 “coarse or rough” and 布 “cloth,” describing the seaweed’s broad, coarse fronds.
