A low-growing shrub of the heath family, found in alpine and arctic regions. The Japanese name is used for Arctous alpina (syn. Arctostaphylos alpina).
Alpine bearberry grows on rocky alpine slopes.
In autumn, the leaves of the alpine bearberry turn red.

Written 裏縞躑躅, the plant name refers to the conspicuous striped venation on the undersides of its leaves.
