unlucky quarter (southwest)
In traditional Japanese geomancy, the southwest direction, opposite the northeast 鬼門 (demon gate), is considered unlucky. Often mentioned in contexts of architecture, feng shui, or superstition.
When building a house, it is said that you should avoid placing water-related facilities in the unlucky southwest direction.
Compound of 裏 (ura, 'back, opposite') and 鬼門 (kimon, 'demon gate, unlucky northeast direction'). The term refers to the direction opposite the traditional unlucky northeast.
