Linguistics term for a vowel inserted between a stem and an inflectional ending, as in Indo-European languages. Not a word used in everyday Japanese.
In Latin verbs, the thematic vowel determines the conjugation type.
Compound of 語幹 (stem) + 形成 (formation) + 母音 (vowel). A calque from Western linguistic terminology.
