Used when someone stakes their life or safety to accomplish something. Often appears as 身を挺して (adverbial form).
消防士は身を挺して子供を救出した。
The firefighter risked his life to rescue the child.
He tried to reveal the truth, putting his life on the line.

A slightly extended use: to commit oneself fully or take initiative, not necessarily life-threatening. Still carries a strong sense of dedication.
社長は身を挺して新事業に取り組んだ。
The president stepped forward and devoted himself to the new business.
彼女は身を挺してチームをまとめた。
She gave her all to bring the team together.
