Mecopoda nipponensis (a species of katydid)
A specific species of katydid found in Japan. The name literally means 'bit insect', referring to the shape of its wings resembling a horse's bit (轡).
On summer nights, you can hear the chirping of the Mecopoda nipponensis.
Kanji spelling is rare and may not be widely recognized.

From 轡「くつわ」and 虫「むし」, traditionally explained by its loud call, which was likened to the clattering of a horse’s bit.
