Intransitive. Used when mountains, houses, cars, people, and similar things form a continuous line or series. Often appears as 連なっている.
遠くに山々が連なっている。

Formal or literary に連なる use for being among the participants, attendants, or members of a group. It is less everyday than 参加する, 出席する, or 入る, and can imply being included in an honored or meaningful company.

Many young people joined the ranks of those calling for reform.
