Primarily used in news or official contexts to refer to Japanese citizens, especially when they are overseas or in situations involving foreign countries.

A somewhat formal or literary term for a compatriot; less common in casual conversation than 同胞 (どうほう) or simply 日本人.
I met a fellow countryman in a foreign land and felt reassured.
