Archaic term for the head of a village, used in historical contexts such as the Edo period or earlier.
During the Edo period, the village chief coordinated the collection of annual tribute as the village representative.
Compound of 里 (sato, 'village') and 長 (osa, 'chief, head'). The reading さとおさ follows the kun'yomi for both characters.
