古文書には「阿母」と記され、幼子が母を呼ぶ言葉として使われた。
In old documents, '阿母' is written as a word used by young children to call their mother.
The exact derivation is uncertain. The kanji 阿 and 母 are used phonetically, possibly as ateji, to represent the sounds あぼ or あも, which may be old baby-talk or familiar forms for 'mother'.
