院いん宣ぜん

imperial decree; decree of a cloistered emperor

Historical term referring to an official written order issued by a cloistered emperor (上皇 or 法皇) during the Heian through Muromachi periods. Not used for modern government decrees.

• 院いん宣ぜんによって、その寺てらは特とく別べつな保ほ護ごを受うけた。

  By imperial decree, that temple received special protection.

• 歴れき史しの授じゅ業ぎょうで、院いん宣ぜんと勅ちょく宣せんの違ちがいを学まなんだ。

  In history class, we learned the difference between an inzen and a chokusen.
