imperial decree; decree of a cloistered emperor
Historical term referring to an official written order issued by a cloistered emperor (上皇 or 法皇) during the Heian through Muromachi periods. Not used for modern government decrees.
By imperial decree, that temple received special protection.

Standard kanji spelling. The reading いんぜん is more common than いんせん.
Alternate reading; いんぜん is preferred in modern contexts.
Compound of 院 (いん, 'cloistered emperor') and 宣 (せん, 'proclamation'). The reading いんぜん is a standard rendaku form.
