Shūgiin (early Meiji legislative body)
Historical term for a short-lived legislative assembly that existed from 1869 to 1873, predating the modern Diet. Not to be confused with the modern 衆議院 (House of Representatives).
The Shūgiin was one of the legislative bodies established in the early Meiji period.
The Shūgiin was abolished in 1873.
Compound of 集 (gather) + 議 (deliberation) + 院 (institution). The name reflects its function as an assembly for discussion.
