Technical term used in atmospheric science and radio communication. Synonymous with 電離層 (でんりそう), which is more common in general contexts.

Compound of 電離 (でんり, 'ionization') and 圏 (けん, 'sphere' or 'region'), literally 'ionized region'. The term is a direct calque of 'ionosphere'.
