Solanum lyratum; a species of nightshade
A climbing perennial plant in the nightshade family, native to East Asia. The name is also used for its red berries.

Kanji spelling is rare and mainly encountered in botanical contexts; the plant is usually written in kana.
The name ヒヨドリジョウゴ literally means 'bulbul drinker' or 'bulbul liking to drink', possibly from the observation that birds such as the brown-eared bulbul (ヒヨドリ) are attracted to its berries. The exact origin is uncertain.
