羽目になるEnd up in an unwelcome situation
羽目になる says that circumstances lead someone into having to do or undergo something burdensome, awkward, or regrettable. It focuses on the predicament produced by earlier events, not on a freely chosen plan.
How it works
The clause before 羽目になる names the unpleasant action or experience that becomes unavoidable. The surrounding sentence usually supplies a cause—such as a mistake, accident, obstacle, or worsening condition—showing how the person was led into that result.
Past, predicted, and approaching results
Change the ending of なる to show whether the predicament happened, is predicted, or appears to be approaching.
目覚まし時計が鳴らず、始発便に間に合わなかったため、翌日の便を取り直す羽目になった。

AnalyzeA stronger version
羽目に陥る gives a stronger image of falling into a difficult situation. It suits a more serious or extended predicament better than a minor inconvenience.
契約内容を確認しなかったため、使わないサービスの料金まで一年間払い続ける羽目に陥った。
Because I failed to check the contract terms, I ended up stuck paying for a service I did not use for an entire year.
AnalyzePredicament, no choice, or critical conclusion?
羽目になる narrates or predicts how circumstances produce an unwelcome situation. ざるを得ない instead emphasizes a current decision made because there is no acceptable alternative. 始末だ closes a chain of events with the speaker's critical judgment about the final bad result, rather than centering the affected person's predicament.
