Expresses that circumstances force someone to take an action they would prefer to avoid. It also describes an unwelcome conclusion that the available facts make difficult to deny.
What makes it different
ざるを得ない does more than say that an action is necessary. It presents the surrounding circumstances as leaving no reasonable way to avoid that action, often despite the person's wishes. The pressure should therefore be stated or clear from the context.
Forced actions and reluctant conclusions
The construction works both with concrete actions and with conclusions that the evidence makes unavoidable.

To describe something that became unavoidable in the past, change the final 得ない to 得なかった.
