ないではいられない・
This pattern says that a feeling or impulse is so strong that someone cannot refrain from acting. It commonly translates as “cannot help doing” or “cannot stop oneself from doing.”
An urge that is hard to resist
The action is presented as a natural reaction to an inner feeling, thought, curiosity, or habit. The wording is negative in form—roughly “cannot remain without doing”—but the sentence means that the action does happen. The final part can change tense, as in いられなかった for a past reaction.
Typical inner reactions
The pattern works especially naturally with reactions such as checking, remembering, laughing, crying, or speaking up.
私はその話を聞いて、確かめないではいられなかった。
When I heard that story, I could not help checking whether it was true.

Inner impulse versus forced necessity
Use the target pattern when the person cannot suppress an inner reaction. Use ざるを得ない when circumstances leave no practical choice, often despite reluctance.
担当者が休んだので、私が代わりに説明せざるを得なかった。
Because the person in charge was absent, I had no choice but to explain in their place.
