Heartfelt or reflective wishes

たいものだ expresses a strong, reflective personal desire. てほしいものだ expresses a heartfelt wish for another person to act or for a situation to change.

A wish with emotional weight

たいものだ does more than report what the speaker currently wants. It presents the desire as something felt deeply, considered over time, or viewed from a reflective distance. The wish may be a dream for the future, something difficult to achieve, or something the speaker longs to experience at least once.

A long-held personal dream

Someday, I would dearly love to see the Antarctic night sky with my own eyes.

Analyze

The scale and distant time frame make this naturally reflective rather than an immediate request or plan.

Who is meant to act or change?

With たいものだ, the speaker normally wishes to perform the action. With てほしいものだ, the speaker wishes for another person, a group, or circumstances to act or change. Make that desired doer or situation clear from the sentence or context.

A wish for circumstances to improve

I sincerely hope this town will gain more places where children can play safely.

Analyze

The desired change is an increase in safe places, not an action performed by the speaker.

Current desire versus reflective wish

Simple たい ordinarily states what the speaker wants now. たいものだ adds emotional weight, reflection, or the sense of a cherished wish. For a straightforward plan or immediate preference, the simple form is usually more natural.

Analyze

Someday, I would really love to travel all the way around Hokkaido.

This presents the journey as a cherished dream.
