When there is no acceptable alternative
Start by asking what the situation has eliminated. If only one practical option remains, choose an option-focused form. If duty rules an action in or out, choose the corresponding わけにはいかない pattern. For reluctant compulsion or formal reports of outside pressure, use a more formal form that makes that pressure explicit.
What has become impossible?
These expressions do not merely mean “must.” They identify a missing alternative. Sometimes every route except one has failed. Sometimes an action is physically possible but cannot responsibly be chosen. Sometimes not acting would violate a promise, role, or practical duty. The more formal patterns can also present a person or organization as compelled by serious outside circumstances.
Choose by the source of pressure
Use the first description that matches what you want to emphasize.
One practical option remains
しかない
You are giving an ordinary, neutral conclusion that there is only one realistic thing to do.
The action itself is unacceptable
わけにはいかない
The action is possible, but duty, a promise, your position, or the circumstances rule it out.
A formal sole-option conclusion
よりほかない・より仕方がない
You want to present “there is no other course” in deliberate reasoning, formal writing, or careful speech.
Circumstances compel an unwanted action
ざるを得ない
The actor is reluctantly forced to act, or the evidence forces an unwelcome conclusion.
Not acting is unacceptable
ないわけにはいかない
A duty, relationship, promise, or practical circumstance makes action necessary.
An affected party is formally reported as forced
を余儀なくされる
A news report, official statement, or institutional document presents a person or organization as compelled by outside pressure.
This pattern normally takes an established action noun, and the affected party is the subject.
The same last option in two registers
All transportation is unavailable, so walking to the venue is the only remaining course.
バスもタクシーも利用できないから、会場まで歩くしかない。
Neither the bus nor a taxi is available, so we'll just have to walk to the venue.

The positive or negative verb reverses the result
A manager has a duty to respond properly to a serious warning.

As the person responsible, I cannot simply ignore this warning.

Reluctant action or formal forced-action report?
ざるを得ない directly states that the actor must reluctantly act. を余儀なくされる is more institutional: it packages the action as a noun and presents the affected party as forced by an outside event.
重大な欠陥が見つかったため、製品責任者の私は発売を延期せざるを得なかった。
Because a serious defect was found, I, as the person responsible for the product, had no choice but to postpone its release.
