にひきかえIn sharp contrast to

にひきかえ sets two comparable people, periods, states, or qualities against each other and emphasizes a striking, usually evaluative difference.

A contrast with an attitude

The two members should be similar enough to compare directly, but different enough for the gap to feel noteworthy. The expression often praises one side and criticizes the other, though the evaluation can also be surprise, disappointment, or admiration.

Core noun pattern

つねじゅんおこたらないあねにひきかえおとうとちょくぜんまでなにもしない。

In sharp contrast to his sister, who is always well prepared, his younger brother does nothing until just before the deadline.

Analyze

The sister and brother are directly comparable, and the sentence clearly evaluates the difference in their behavior.

Keep the two sides parallel

Make both comparison members explicit or easy to recover. A person should normally be contrasted with another person, one period with another period, or one quality with a corresponding quality. If the reader has to guess what is being compared, the construction loses its force.

Modern clause extension

ぜんかい調ちょうではかいとうりつたかかったのにひきかえこんかいはんすうにもとどかなかった。

Whereas the response rate was high in the previous survey, this time it did not even reach half.

Analyze

Modern references document a full plain clause followed by the noun-like connector here. Noun attachment remains the safest default.

Referring back to a previous sentence

きゅうかんさいこうわるく、ふゆそこえした。それにひきかえしんかんあかるくあたたかい。

The old building had poor natural light and was bitterly cold in winter. In sharp contrast, the new building is bright and warm.

Analyze

Choosing the right comparison form

にひきかえ emphasizes a striking, evaluative gap between two actual members. くらべて is the neutral general-purpose choice for comparison, while たいして can organize a more objective contrast. はんして is different: it says that a result goes against an expectation, intention, or standard rather than placing two actual members side by side.
