Choosing how to contrast two sides

Choose by asking what kind of “two sides” you have. Use たいして for distinct matched members, はんめん for genuinely opposed aspects of one whole, いっぽう(で) for a broad, measured pairing, and にひきかえ when a striking difference deserves emphasis. English words such as “whereas” and “on the other hand” do not decide the Japanese form by themselves.

Start with the relationship between the sides

Identify whether you are comparing separate members, examining one subject from opposite angles, simply organizing two related facts, or stressing an especially large gap.

Two distinct, parallel members

たいして

Two people, groups, places, periods, or facts are compared along a clearly shared feature.

The same form can mark the target of an action or attitude. A contrastive reading needs a recognizable pair.

Opposing aspects of one whole

One person, policy, product, or situation has a real benefit and drawback, or two conflicting qualities.

It is not suitable for two merely compatible activities.

A broad, measured pairing

You want to organize two related sides clearly. They may conflict, but they may also be compatible roles or activities.

This two-sided use is different from verb + いっぽう, which describes a change continuing in one direction.

A striking, evaluative gap

Two comparable people, periods, states, or qualities differ sharply, and you want to emphasize that difference.

It is too emphatic for a small, routine, or emotionally neutral difference.

Neutral matching or a pointed judgment?

たいして and にひきかえ can both place separate members side by side. The first organizes the contrast relatively neutrally; the second presents the difference as remarkable and usually reveals more praise, criticism, surprise, or disappointment.

Video use is higher among younger people, whereas newspaper use is higher among older people.

Analyze

In sharp contrast to the previous representative's careful explanations, even the main points in the new representative's explanations are hard to follow.

Analyze

The praise of one side and criticism of the other justify the emphatic form.

One subject: opposition or simple organization

A policy gives users more freedom but also places more responsibility on them.

This system gives users more freedom, but the other side of that is greater responsibility.

Analyze

This system gives users more freedom, while also placing greater responsibility on the users themselves.

Takeaway: はんめん makes the second point feel like the opposing side or cost of the first. いっぽう presents the same two facts more broadly and analytically.

The broadest member also allows coexistence

Unlike the other three choices, this form does not always signal opposition. It can simply give equal space to two roles or activities.

He works at a hospital and also directs a local choir on his days off.

Analyze

The two activities coexist; neither is presented as a drawback or contradiction.

The new device processes data quickly, but its battery also drains quickly.

Analyze

Here the same form does organize an advantage and a disadvantage.
