かわりにInstead of; in place of

かわりに introduces a person, thing, or action used in place of the one that would normally be chosen or expected.

What is being replaced?

Read the sentence as a two-part relationship: the part before かわりに identifies the normal or expected choice, and the rest of the sentence identifies the substitute. With a noun, remember that the noun before is the item being replaced—not the replacement.

Analyze

Replacing one action with another

After a plain verb clause, the expression presents the following action as an alternative to the first. Both actions should be clear enough that the listener can understand what was not done and what was done instead.

ちょくせついにくかわりにくわしいがみいた。

Instead of going to meet them in person, I wrote a detailed letter.

Analyze

An exchange between two actions

かわりに can also describe a reciprocal arrangement: one person does one task in exchange for another person doing a different task. This extends the same replacement idea, but the two sides should form an obvious exchange.

わたしゆうしょくつくるかわりにおとうとさらあらう。

I will make dinner, and in return my younger brother will wash the dishes.

Analyze

This is an exchange of responsibilities rather than a simple choice between two methods.

Everyday substitution versus formal representation

かわりに is the broad everyday choice for substitution. わって is more formal and is especially natural when someone acts as an official representative or successor.

しゃちょうわってふくしゃちょうしきてんあいさつした。

The vice president gave the address at the ceremony on behalf of the president.

Analyze

The formal setting and representative role make the more formal expression natural here.
