に代わってIn place of; replacing
に代わって says that someone acts in another person’s place or that a new person, system, material, or method replaces an earlier one.
Who replaces whom?
The noun immediately before に代わって is the person or thing being represented or replaced. The substitute is normally the subject of the following clause, or it is already clear from context.
Acting as a representative
社長に代わって、副社長が式典で挨拶した。
The vice president gave a speech at the ceremony in place of the company president.
AnalyzeThe company president is the person being represented; the vice president performs the action instead.
Replacing a system or method
The construction also presents a new system, material, method, or officeholder as the successor to an earlier one.
Formal representation versus everyday substitution
に代わって is more formal and readily highlights official representation or succession. かわりに is broader and more ordinary in everyday situations.
母のかわりに、私が買い物に行った。
I went shopping instead of my mother.
AnalyzeThis is an ordinary personal substitution, so the everyday form is natural.
