ところがUnexpected turn: however
ところが begins a new sentence or part of a story with a fact that unexpectedly overturns what the preceding context led you to expect. The surprise may be good or bad.
Set up the expectation first
ところが is strongest when the listener can clearly predict one outcome from the first sentence. The next sentence then reveals that reality went in another direction. Without that expectation, it may sound heavier than an ordinary contrast word.
Unexpected outcomes
In each example, the first sentence makes one outcome seem likely, while the second reports the surprising reality.

Choosing the right contrast
ところが presents the second fact as an unforeseen turn in events. しかし is broader and can simply place two facts, opinions, or qualities in contrast without creating a story-like surprise. それなのに also marks a violated expectation, but it more readily communicates the speaker's disappointment, frustration, or criticism. By comparison, the target can report the surprising turn more observationally.
