ところでBy the way
ところで signals that the speaker is leaving the current subject and introducing a new one, often with “by the way.” The new matter may be only loosely connected to what came before.
Making a clear topic switch
Use ところで after the current exchange has reached a reasonable stopping point. It tells the listener not to search for a strong logical connection: the speaker is now raising a different matter.
A new question in polite conversation
会場は駅の近くです。受付は九時に始まります。
The venue is near the station. Registration begins at nine.

Timing matters
ところで is not inherently rude, but it can feel abrupt if used while the other person is still developing an important point. Wait for a pause, acknowledge what was said when appropriate, and then introduce the new topic.
Independent connective versus an attached expression
Sentence-initial ところで changes the topic. When the same written sequence follows a past-form verb directly, it belongs to a different pattern meaning “even if”; there is no topic switch.
話し合いはこれで終わりです。ところで、帰りのバスは何時ですか。
