というよりRather than saying; more accurately
This pattern replaces an initial description with one the speaker considers more accurate: “rather than calling it A, it is more B.” It can correct your own wording or gently revise someone else’s description.
Replace the first description
Put the description you are reconsidering before the pattern and the more accurate description after it. The second part is not just another possibility: it is the wording the speaker prefers.
Clear corrections and refinements
The second description may sharpen the first, explain what is really happening, or change the way the situation is framed.
彼は無口というより、言葉を慎重に選ぶ人だ。
Rather than being quiet, he is someone who chooses his words carefully.
Analyze驚いたというより、少し怖くなった。
More than being surprised, I became a little frightened.
AnalyzeThis is a self-correction: the speaker first considers “surprised,” then replaces it with a more accurate emotional description.
この部屋は狭いというより、家具が多すぎる。
The room is not so much small as overcrowded with furniture.

Analyze大変だったというより、話がまとまらなくて疲れた。
Rather than difficult, it was exhausting because the discussion went nowhere.
AnalyzeThe reply does not simply disagree. It accepts the situation under discussion but replaces the first speaker’s description with a more precise one.
Not a search between two labels
というか～というか keeps two descriptions in play while the speaker searches for the right words. By contrast, the target pattern presents the second description as better.
この店は、居心地がいいというか、懐かしいというか、不思議な感じがする。
This place feels comfortable—or perhaps nostalgic; it has a curious atmosphere.
AnalyzeNeither label is clearly rejected, so this is a search for words rather than a firm correction.
