とはくらべものにならないIncomparable to

This construction says that the gap between two things is so great that an ordinary comparison feels inadequate. It is emphatic: use it for a genuinely dramatic difference, not a small advantage or disadvantage.

How the comparison works

The item before とは is the benchmark. The construction itself says only that the gap is enormous; it does not say which side is better. An adjective, a verb, or the surrounding context must supply that direction.

Make the direction clear

いまほんやくシステムのせいは、ねんまえとはくらべものにならないほどたかい。

The accuracy of today's translation systems is incomparably higher than it was five years ago.

Analyze

When the sentence ends with the construction

The sentence may end directly with とはくらべものにならない, but only when the surrounding context makes the direction of the gap unmistakable.

The medical environment at that time was nothing like today's. Far less equipment was available.

Analyze

The second sentence makes clear that conditions in the past were worse.

Typical dramatic contrasts

The construction works naturally with major gaps in skill, severity, speed, scale, quality, and conditions over time.

A professional pitcher's velocity is incomparably faster than an amateur pitcher's.

Analyze

Analyze

A more restrained alternative

とはくらべものにならない dramatizes a gap so large that the two sides barely belong in the same comparison. By contrast, にはおよばない more restrainedly says that one side does not reach the other's level and is often suitable for modest or formal self-assessment.

じゅつでは、わたしはまだしょうにはおよばない

In terms of skill, I still do not measure up to my mentor.

Analyze

This is a restrained acknowledgment of an inferior level, not a dramatic claim that comparison is almost impossible.
