JLPT N2Spoken and writtenLevel-headed

に越こしたことはないit's best if; ideally

It names the ideal without insisting on it: cheaper is better, earlier is safer, of course. What follows is often "but you can manage without".

How to form it

Verb dictionary form/ない-form/い-adjective + に越こしたことはない

A な-adjective or a noun goes straight on, or with である in writing: 安あん全ぜん(である)に越こしたことはない. Polite: に越こしたことはありません.

Before it
Something nobody would argue with: 安やすい, 早はやい, 多おおい, 安あん全ぜん, 用よう心じん (taking care).
After it
Often が and the catch: the price, the time, or "it isn't essential".
Tone
Level-headed. It states plain good sense and leaves the choice to you.
Where you'll meet it
Conversation and writing: travel tips, money, health, safety.

In use

The ideal, not a must

It says what would be best and stops there. Less than the ideal still works.

それに越こしたことはない answers a hope: "that would be best", "so much the better".
