にすぎないMerely; nothing more than
にすぎない presents something as no more than the stated fact, amount, role, or interpretation. It often corrects an assumption that the reality is larger or more important.
How it works
The phrase before にすぎない states the limited reality. The surrounding context usually suggests a broader assumption and then reduces it: a supposedly major achievement was only a small change, an apparent official statement was only a personal opinion, or a large-looking number was only a small proportion. The tone can be dismissive, but it is often simply a modest or factual correction.
Reducing an assumption to the facts
Notice how each sentence limits a quantity, role, explanation, or action rather than merely marking an exclusive boundary.
この数字は全体の一部にすぎない。
This figure is only one part of the whole.

Choosing among similar limiting expressions
にすぎない adds the speaker or writer's judgment that the stated reality is limited or less significant than someone might assume. だけ can mark an ordinary neutral limit, while のみ is a formal exclusive marker without necessarily downplaying importance. でしかない is close in meaning but is used for noun-based identity or characterization; unlike にすぎない, it cannot directly follow an ordinary verb clause.
彼は名目上の責任者でしかない。
He is nothing more than the nominal person in charge.
