にしろ~にしろ・ にせよ~にせよWhether A or B
にしろ~にしろ and にせよ~にせよ present two alternatives and say that the same conclusion holds whichever one applies. They often translate as “whether A or B” or “regardless of whether A or B.”
One conclusion for both alternatives
The point is not simply to list two possibilities. The statement after the pair must remain true in either case. The alternatives are commonly opposites, different choices, or two possible situations.
Noun and verb alternatives
Notice that each alternative has the same grammatical shape and repeats the same ending.
Choosing between the two versions
にしろ is natural in conversation as well as writing, especially when giving firm advice, requirements, or judgments. にせよ gives the same basic meaning but suits formal discussions, policies, and careful written explanations more readily.
Nearby patterns
にしても~にしても shares much of the same core meaning and is often interchangeable, but it commonly sounds softer, as if considering two representative cases. The distinction is a tendency rather than a strict rule. であれ~であれ is more elevated and is especially suitable for formal principles that apply regardless of category or status.
正社員であれ契約社員であれ、同じ安全基準を守る必要がある。
Whether someone is a permanent employee or a contract employee, the same safety standards must be followed.
AnalyzeThis is the more elevated category-based pattern, shown here only for contrast.
