途中に・ 途中でPartway through; on the way
This expression places something on a journey or within an activity that has begun but has not yet reached its destination or completion. Depending on the context, it means “on the way,” “partway through,” or “in the middle of.”
An unfinished route or process
途中 presents something as a course with an endpoint. That course may be a physical journey, a task, a meeting, a sports season, or another bounded activity. The important point is that it is already underway and not yet complete.
Typical uses

Choosing the particle
に often highlights a point or place along the course, while で is frequent when another event occurs within the course or interrupts it. These uses overlap, however, and the following verb may determine which particle sounds natural. The particle can also be omitted when the phrase simply sets the time or scene.
With no following particle
駅へ向かう途中、急に雨が降り出した。
On the way to the station, it suddenly started raining.
AnalyzeNeutral progress versus focused immediacy
途中 neutrally says that an endpoint has not yet been reached. 最中 instead zooms in on being right in the middle of an event, often making an interruption feel more immediate.
