さいちゅうだ・さいちゅうRight in the middle of

さいちゅうだ・さいちゅう emphasizes that an activity or event is right in its middle or at its height. It is especially common when something happens at that moment and the timing feels striking or inconvenient.

The central idea

さいちゅう does not merely locate something somewhere within a period. It highlights the active middle or height of a process. The activity must therefore have enough duration to possess a meaningful middle.

Two basic patterns

Use the sentence-ending form to report the current status, and the form ending in to introduce something that happens during that central phase.

いまほうこくしょいているさいちゅうです

I’m right in the middle of writing the report.

An alarm suddenly went off right in the middle of the meeting.

Analyze

Why interruptions are common

The expression itself does not mean “to interrupt.” However, speakers often choose it when another event occurs at a particularly noticeable or inconvenient moment. That is why alarms, phone calls, visitors, and equipment failures frequently follow the form ending in .

An inconvenient moment

はははなしているさいちゅうたくはい便びんた。

A delivery arrived while I was right in the middle of talking with my mother.

Choosing among nearby time expressions

Use ているところだ for a neutral report that an action is currently underway. Use ているあいだ when something happens anywhere within the broader ongoing interval. Forms such as ところに frame the scene or moment into which another event enters. By contrast, さいちゅう explicitly stresses the very middle or height of the activity.
