よりましだ・ ほうがましだBetter than; the lesser evil
よりましだ and ほうがましだ judge one undesirable choice as better, or less bad, than another. The chosen option is acceptable only by comparison, not necessarily good in itself.
Which option is better?
The option before より is the worse baseline. The option marked by ほう is the one selected as less bad. Both alternatives should be clear and should plausibly feel inconvenient, unpleasant, or inadequate.
Comparing noun choices
壊れかけの傘より、少し重い傘のほうがましだ。
A slightly heavy umbrella is still better than one that is falling apart.
AnalyzeThe heavy umbrella is not being praised; it is merely the less troublesome choice.
Comparing actions
With verbs, compare complete actions. The second action is the one the speaker reluctantly prefers.
Leaving out the explicit choice
The full ほうが phrase is often unnecessary when the current option or situation is already clear. The comparison can then end directly in よりましだ.
痛みはまだあるが、昨日よりはましだ。
The pain is still there, but it is better than yesterday.
AnalyzeThe present condition is understood as the less bad side of the comparison.
A direct comparison versus one saving grace
よりましだ directly ranks one option above a worse alternative. By contrast, だけましだ points to one limited saving grace within an otherwise bad situation.
給料は低いが、残業がないだけましだ。
The pay is low, but at least there is no overtime.
AnalyzeThis does not choose between two jobs; it identifies the absence of overtime as the situation’s one saving grace.
