くらいならRather than; if the alternative is
Rejects one course of action as undesirable and presents another as preferable—or at least less bad.
The judgment behind the pattern
The action before くらいなら is not presented as a neutral possibility. The speaker treats it as unwelcome and then names a better choice. A natural English shape is “rather than do A, I would do B” or “if doing A is the alternative, B would be better.”
Choosing the better alternative
The second clause can give advice, identify the less bad option, or state the speaker’s own choice directly.

Analyze興味のない仕事を続けるくらいなら、収入が少なくても好きな仕事を選ぶ。

AnalyzeA conditional frame versus a simple comparison
くらいなら explicitly places the rejected action first as a conditional frame: “if that is what I would have to do.” By contrast, ほうがましだ is a broader way to call one unattractive option less bad and does not require this frame.
Choosing between the two variants
くらいなら and ぐらいなら are both natural. Learn them as interchangeable variants rather than assigning them separate meanings.
