ようがない・ ようもないNo way to do
ようがない says that an action cannot be carried out because no workable method, information, access, or procedure exists. ようもない is a more emphatic alternative: there is simply no way.
The missing method is the point
Use this pattern when some objective obstacle removes every practical route to the action: evidence has disappeared, necessary information is unknown, access is blocked, or the required tool or procedure does not exist. The speaker's willingness is not the main issue.
Typical missing means
Each example makes the unavailable means or information clear.
証拠が失われた今、事故の原因は確かめようがない。
Now that the evidence has been lost, there is no way to determine the cause of the accident.
Analyze説明書も型番もないので、この機械は直しようがない。
Without either the manual or the model number, there is no way to repair this machine.
Analyze地図も住所もなければ、その店を探しようもない。
Without a map or an address, there is simply no way to find the shop.
AnalyzeThe emphatic alternative
ようもない uses も to strengthen the denial. It often corresponds to “there is absolutely no way” or “there is no possible way,” though the exact strength depends on context.
With an action noun
住所も電話番号も知らないので、連絡のしようがない。
I know neither the address nor the phone number, so there is no way to get in touch.
Analyze連絡 names the action, so it is followed by のしようがない.
No method versus a blocked attempt
ようがない judges that no possible method exists. By contrast, the pattern formed with a volitional verb followed by にも and a negative verb presents someone as wanting or trying to act but being blocked. Choose according to whether the missing method or the person's frustrated intention is central.
