要するに introduces the essential takeaway from a longer explanation or discussion. It tells the listener or reader, “This is the main point.”
Reducing details to one central point
The statement after 要するに should be shorter, more central, or more useful for making a decision than the material before it. The expression looks backward: it gathers earlier facts and presents what the listener should take away from them.
Summaries in meetings and writing
These conclusions compress several earlier facts rather than merely adding another fact.

Gist versus direct rephrasing
要するに extracts the main takeaway from a larger explanation. By contrast, つまり can simply restate one expression in clearer or equivalent terms, without summarizing a whole discussion.
締め切りは金曜日、つまり今週の最終営業日です。
The deadline is Friday—in other words, the final business day of this week.
AnalyzeThis directly identifies Friday with another description; it does not reduce several facts to one takeaway.
