つまりすなわちIn other words; namely

つまり introduces a clearer rephrasing, concise summary, or close practical conclusion. すなわち presents a more formal equivalent, definition, or exact identification.

What the second part must do

The material after the connective must genuinely recast what came before. It may express the same content more clearly, reduce it to a shorter formulation, identify it exactly, or state a practical result that follows very closely. It should not simply introduce the next event or an unsupported new conclusion.

Rephrasing and exact equivalence

かいらいしゅうえんになりました。つまり明日あしたあつまりません。

Restatement, inference, and gist

つまり normally recasts information already available. By contrast, ということは highlights a new inference drawn from the facts. ようするに is used when the main task is extracting the essential point from a longer or more complicated discussion; it is less suited to simple word-for-word identification.

みせでんえている。ということは、もうへいてんしたのだろう。
