込むMove inward or become deeply involved
込む attaches to a verb to add movement inward, insertion into something, or deep and sustained involvement in an action or state. Its natural English translation changes with each compound.
One image, several results
The common image is movement from the outside toward the inside. That inside may be a physical space, as when someone jumps into a pool, or a state, as when someone sinks into thought. With some established verbs, the same image develops into thorough or intensive activity.
Physical movement and insertion
The first verb tells you how the movement happens; 込む supplies the inward direction.
Entering deeply into an action or state
The inward movement can be figurative. The subject becomes absorbed in a state, or performs an activity thoroughly rather than merely doing it once.
彼は質問されると、しばらく考え込んだ。
When asked the question, he fell into deep thought for a while.
Analyze考える supplies the thinking, while 込む suggests becoming deeply absorbed in it.
研究者たちは古い記録を何度も読み込んだ。
The researchers studied the old records thoroughly, reading them repeatedly.
Analyze読む gives the activity, while 込む makes the reading intensive and thorough.
Depth is not the same as simple continuation
読み込む suggests reading deeply or thoroughly. By contrast, 読み続ける simply says that the reading continues. Neither expression automatically means that the book or material was completed.
