とおしてThrough; by means of a channel or intermediary

とおして presents a person, organization, medium, activity, or experience as the channel through which something is communicated, learned, obtained, or achieved. It emphasizes the connection between that channel and the resulting action or change.

The channel connects two sides

The noun before とおして acts as a bridge. It may connect one person to another, carry information to an audience, or provide an experience that leads to learning or change. The action or result normally comes after the phrase.

People, media, and experience

Notice that each sentence names both a channel and a result reached through that channel.

Choose the relationship, not just the English word

Use for a direct tool, transport method, or language. Use によって for a method or procedure described more abstractly. Use とおして when a person, organization, medium, activity, or experience serves as the channel. Use when the important idea is passing through stages, places, or a route. Also be careful with time expressions: the same visible form after a period can mean “throughout” rather than “by means of.” The sentence below illustrates that separate period use, not the means use taught on this page.

このいきいちねんとおしてかぜつよい。

The wind is strong in this area throughout the year.

Analyze

The year is a complete period, not a channel or intermediary.

Activities as meaningful experience

With the pattern “verb in dictionary form + ことをとおして,” the activity is presented as a process that produces learning, personal growth, understanding, or a new relationship. This is more than simply stating that two actions happened at the same time.
