たとえてもたとえでもEven if; no matter if

たとえ~ても・たとえ~でも presents an imagined condition—often a difficult or extreme one—and says that the result, decision, or evaluation will remain unchanged even then.

The imagined condition does not change the outcome

たとえ asks the listener to imagine a particular possibility. The clause then ends in ても or でも, and the following clause gives the decision or result that still holds. The imagined case may be extreme, but it does not have to be impossible.

Common forms

Notice that each first clause presents a possible obstacle, while the second clause remains firm.

たとえあめってもあいていどおりおこないます。

Analyze

たとえでもさいまであきらめない。

Even if the situation is unfavorable, I will not give up until the end.

Analyze

Why it sounds emphatic

The speaker is not merely acknowledging a condition. By adding たとえ, the speaker deliberately selects a challenging possibility and states that it will not alter the conclusion. This often gives the sentence a determined or principled tone, though the construction itself is not formal.

An intentionally extreme possibility

たとえかいじゅうひとわらわれてもわたしぶんゆめあきらめない。

Even if everyone in the world laughs at me, I will not give up on my dream.

Analyze

The exaggerated condition strengthens the speaker's determination; it is not presented as the expected cause of the decision.

Choosing among similar concessive patterns

Bare ても・でも is the broader construction and does not have to highlight the condition as a deliberate hypothesis. Use たとえ~ても・たとえ~でも when you want to say, in effect, “suppose even this happens.” By contrast, どんなに~ても and いくら~ても vary a degree, amount, or extent. Forms such as としても also grant a supposition, but frame it differently and are common in more developed reasoning or discussion.
