Explicit hypothetical “if”

もしも~なら explicitly asks someone to imagine an if-scenario. It is especially natural for uncertain possibilities, contingency plans, unlikely events, and thought experiments, but it does not necessarily mean that the condition is impossible.

What the extra word adds

なら marks the condition itself. Placing もしも before the condition tells the listener to step into a specially imagined situation. This is useful when considering what to do if something happens, expressing a wish, or exploring a situation far removed from reality.

From real uncertainty to fantasy

The scenario can be genuinely possible, clearly counterfactual, or entirely fantastical.

If the fever still hasn’t gone down tomorrow, let’s go to the hospital.

Analyze

This is a real uncertainty and a practical contingency plan.

Analyze

The speaker imagines having a different identity or role.

If I could become a bird, I’d like to try flying across the sea.

Analyze

This is a fantastical thought experiment.

Inviting someone to imagine

If you could take a month off, what would you want to do?

Analyze
B

I’d like to travel around the world at a relaxed pace.

Analyze

Questions about dreams and imagined choices are a particularly natural setting for this pattern.

With and without explicit hypothetical emphasis

Both sentences are grammatical. The version with もしも deliberately invites the listener to imagine the possibility; plain なら presents the condition more directly and ordinarily.

If we happen to have time this weekend, let’s go to the sea.

Analyze

The available time is presented as a possibility to imagine.

If we have time this weekend, let’s go to the sea.

Analyze

This is the neighboring plain conditional use, without the added hypothetical framing.

Hypothetical does not always mean impossible

The condition may be unlikely or contrary to present reality, but that is not required. A possible future problem can also take もしも~なら when the speaker wants to plan explicitly for that possibility. The surrounding situation tells you how realistic the condition is.
