てもなくてもWhether or not

This pattern says that the same result, decision, or judgment applies whether an action happens or does not happen. By naming both possibilities, it makes clear that the choice does not affect the main clause.

Both choices, one result

The first half presents doing the action, and the second presents not doing it. Together they cover both possibilities. The main clause then states what remains true in either case.

Why use the pair?

A single clause ending in ても concedes one condition: “even if.” The paired form ても~なくても explicitly includes both doing and not doing, giving the stronger and clearer reading “whether or not.”
