If only; would have, but did not
This pattern imagines a condition that is not true and a result that therefore did not or cannot happen. It often expresses a present wish, disappointment, or regret about a missed past alternative.
Two realities at once
The sentence presents an imagined condition and its imagined result, while the context tells us that reality was different. A nonpast result describes something that would be true now or later; a past result describes what would have happened in the past.
Present wishes and past regrets
If I lived closer to the station, I could walk there every day. My current home is too far away.
AnalyzeThe home is not close enough, so the present result is impossible.
If I had checked the map then, I would not have gotten lost. In fact, I set off without checking it.
AnalyzeBoth the condition and the result belong to an unreal past.
I should have consulted the person in charge sooner. In the end, I missed the deadline.
AnalyzeThe common regret frame points to an action that was not taken in time.
Leaving the disappointment hanging
You could not finish the presentation?
Analyze
Right. If I had had five more minutes, I could have explained everything...
AnalyzeThe final pause lets the regret remain emotionally unfinished, even though the imagined result itself is stated.
Not every final noni is counterfactual
In this lesson, the condition is contrary to reality and the result is unrealized. By contrast, ordinary adversative のに connects two facts that contrast unexpectedly. Also be careful with the advice pattern ending in いいのに: if the suggested action is still possible, it is advice or criticism rather than regret about an unreal alternative.
Although it is raining, the children are playing outside.
AnalyzeThis is the neighboring factual contrast: both the rain and the children's activity are real.
