とおり・ どおりAs stated or modeled
とおり・どおり says that an action or result matches a particular model, instruction, plan, prediction, or previously stated content.
Matching a specific model
The key idea is close correspondence, not just general similarity. The later action or result follows what was said, shown, planned, predicted, or written.
With verbs
Choose the verb form according to when the model itself occurs. A dictionary form can describe something being shown now or still to come; a past form points back to an already completed statement or action.
With nouns and different endings
Add に when the expression describes how an action is done, の when it modifies a noun, and だ or です when directly stating that something matches.
Exact model or broader guideline?
とおり stresses matching particular content or a model. に沿って is better for acting in line with a broader policy, guideline, route, or general course.
External model or personal inclination?
とおり points to a model that the action reproduces. The pattern with まま can instead mean acting as one wishes or letting events follow their course.
