とおり・どおりjust as; exactly as

Something matches what was said, planned or expected, with nothing changed: just as I told you, right on schedule, exactly as the manual says.

医い者しゃに言いわれたとおりに、毎まい朝あさ薬くすりを飲のんでいる。

I take the medicine every morning, just as the doctor told me to.

計けい画かくどおりに作さ業ぎょうが進すすんでいる。

After a verb

Verb (dictionary form or た-form) + とおり

The た-form for what was already said, thought or heard: 言いったとおり, 思おもったとおり. The dictionary form for what is said or shown now: 言いうとおり.

After a noun, with の

Noun + の + とおり

説せつ明めい書しょのとおり, 予よ定ていのとおり.

Straight onto a noun

Noun + どおり

予よ定ていどおり, 時じ間かんどおり. With no の, the sound changes to どおり. The usual way with a plan, a time or a forecast. In kanji: 言いった通とおり, 予よ定てい通どおり.

Before it: What is matched: what someone said or told you, what you thought, a plan, a forecast, instructions.
After it: に before what is done that way (it often drops), だ or です to end the sentence, の before a noun.
Where you'll meet it: Everywhere, from chat to manuals and announcements.

"Like", a resemblance, and a looser "as": さっき言いったように is "as I mentioned". とおり is the exact one: to the letter.

"According to" a source: where you heard it. とおり is "according to" a plan: things match it.

天てん気き予よ報ほうによると、明日あしたは雨あめだそうだ。

According to the forecast, it will rain tomorrow.

ままN4

Unchanged from before: just as it was. とおり matches something said, planned or shown.

この町まちは昔むかしのままだ。

This town is still just as it was long ago.
